Preschool Sunday School Lessons: Life of Jesus

This is a blog for my lesson planning for the Winter-Spring 2010 term of the Preschool Sunday School Class. What a joy it is to teach the kids about the life of Jesus. Previous older posts were from my bible study journalling.

Fruit of the Spirit Lesson Plan

This is fairly popular subject to teach the kids, and it's common to link this topic to crafts ideas related to Fruits on  a Tree. However that linkage is quite weak because the kids idea of fruit is not quite the same as our idea of "bearing fruit" or manifestation of desirable qualities in a mature Christian.

I think it's important to teach kids about this characteristics God expects of us, but it would also help to explain how these are show in God's character. This also gives an opportunity to take examples from gospel or from Jesus life. Crafts are only a small but tangible part of it. The storytime and lesson time is very important.

Another approach is to think about each "fruit" and form a lesson or craft idea around each.

Love - something to do with hearts. Valentine craft ideas are cute. Here is a beautiful beaded heart ornament

Joy - What a great opportunity to have Christmas in July! Think of something about the joy of Christmas, the birth of Jesus. A Christmas star or another joyful ornament idea.

Peace - a dove, world peace, with Nature? with God? with Mankind.

Patience - To demonstrate patience it could be a task that requires details and a bit more time.

Kindness -  a helping hand. I saw a picture someone made. They traced their hand and cut it out like a tree trunk. They wrote words on green leaves, presumably the Fruit of the spirit.

Goodness - food?

Faithfulness - A story about God's faithfulness

Gentleness

Self control - thoughts on patience, God's character.

Slow down a little, dad, cuz I'm not fast. Point to yourself.
I want to be with you, cuz you're a blast!Point to dad.
I want to keep up, and follow in your steps!Walk in place.
You're a super dad, and I'm so blessed!Point up, then to yourself.
Slow down a little, Dad. My legs aren't long.Point to legs.
I want to be like you: So wise and strong!Make a muscle with arm.
I want to keep up, and copy you! Point to dad.
I want to be loving in all I do. Cross arms over chest.
I thank the Lord I have such a great dad! Place hands together in prayer.
Knowing you're my dad, makes me glad!Touch corners of smile.
You teach me, protect me, watch me too.Place hand above brow as if looking out.
I hope I grow up to be just like you! Point to your dad.

Jesus Washes the Disciples Feet

This is a lesson taken from the Baby Beginnings series for the May Lesson.

Colouring page at the start: Following Jesus, maze pg 36 Matt 4:19

Picture - descriptive, ask lots of questions.
Story: John 13:2-5
The disciples walked with Jesus for miles and their feet were so dirty. Jesus wrapped a towel around his waist, filled a bowl with water water and washed everyone's feet, and dried them with a towel.  Jesus loved to help his friends, people at church love to help you too.

Who are some people at church who help us?
List - Sunday School Teachers, Cynthia, etc

Song: tune of London Bridge
People at church help me today,
when I eat, when I play.
People help me every day.
Thank you, God.

Craft:
Trace the children's feet, choose left or right, shoes and socked removed; at the center of a piece of paper.
Say "Elisabeth, I'm so glad you came today. I'm glad to help you."
Draw a circle around  the foot, like a bowl.
Colour the "water" blue
Glue the bible verse John 13:5 -  5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
